As a former teacher in the Berkeley schools, I have 20+ years experience leading groups of kids, engaging their curiosity and marvelous imaginations. I offer a variety of presentations for elementary school students. All of my programs are interactive and playful and include time for Q and A.
Persistence!
With protagonist Prudence from Prudence Wants a Pet as the inspiration, this presentation explores three qualities that help dreams become realities – Imagination, Action and Persistence. (I.A.P.!) Cathleen shares aspects of her 22 year-long journey to become a published author. Grades K-2: 30-45 minutes. Grades 3-6: 45 minutes.
Fantastical Creatures
Using Prudence’s resourceful imagination in Prudence Wants a Pet as an example, children create their own fantastical pets and creatures. The presentation includes props, interactive art games, and the creation of a simple group “pet.” Topics covered include artistic collaboration, found object art, and who in the world is Shoe-bacca? Grades preK-2: 30-45 minutes. Grades 3-6: 45 minutes.
Interactive Cubist Portrait
Using Emily’s Blue Period as the focal point, this presentation explores Pablo Picasso, his blue period and cubism. We create a group cubist portrait, play interactive art games, and find the different classic artworks tucked away in the illustrations of Emily’s Blue Period. This presentation is 45 minutes and ideal for grades 2-6.

About Cathleen
Cathleen Daly is an artist, writer and designer living in Berkeley, California. She is the author of two children’s picture books and a tween novel, Flirt Club, all published by Roaring Brook Press, a subsidiary of Macmillan Publishers. Prudence Wants a Pet was included in the Washington Children’s Choice Picture Book Award Master List, the Nebraska Golden Sower Award Master List, the Illinois Monarch Award Master List, and was an American Library Association Notable Children’s Book of 2012. Emily’s Blue Period, was the runner up for the 2015-2016 Texas Bluebonnet Award, was a Junior Library Guild Selection, a Bank Street Best Children’s Book of the Year, and a Cooperative Children’s Book Center Choice.
